I believe the number of Vietnam Veterans who went through the "West Point of Capitalism" would surprise even those of us among that number. Quite some time ago, I posed the question to HBS and got the response shown here. I am proud of both my Vietnam service and of my Alumni status from HBS. I believe that the demonstration of this factoid helps put the lie to the stereotypical image of the Vietnam veteran. When I thought of funding the program in this manner (I didn't want to be accused of being funded by the Republican campaign), I didn't realize how large the pool actually was. Having done the initial survey, we have kept the pledge level low in the hopes of getting a high rate of participation. Please complete the census, make your pledges and encourage your classmates to do the same.

“Our nation has not kept its promise to our veterans.  We should be taking better care of all veterans, and particularly those who have not succeeded in civilian pursuits.” --- Alfred Diaz, Sec. D

“So the question is... What does/will this assembly do? what will it change?  It seems to me that there should be pressure on Harvard as a very historic institution; pressure on its president to remember the names in Mem Hall and to reinstitute ROTC.
I wish you fair winds and smooth seas.” --- Gary Blinn, Sec. A

“Count me in for $100.  Also you may consider inviting Tad Oldstrom who heads National Security at the JFK School of Gov. He is a retired USAF Lt. Gen. and a friend.” --- Alan Rogers, Sec. E

“I didn't see Dick Schlosberg's name on your list -- I don't know if he served in Vietnam, but he came to HBS from Active Duty in the U.S. Air Force.  Also, Craig Martin came to HBS from Active Duty in the U.S. Navy.” --- Mike Flanigan, Sec. G

“Thank you for what you are doing!!!” --- Gary Pagon, Sec. E

“Great idea.    I would like to attend, but am not sure I can.  The Viet Nam vets in my section are: Blinn (wrote a great book on his experience in Viet Nam - longest known living heart transplant recipient - served in Swift Boats with Kerry - would be a very good speaker), Daley (DFC, Naval Reserve Captain, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Naval War College Foundation), Domino, Kammer (career officer), Robinson (West Point Grad, but anti-war).

I now notice, you have left off several in my section, who are Viet Nam or Viet Nam era vets: Cook (career officer), Jim Smith (career officer), Joe Lessa (career officer), Dirck Schow (retired due to wounds), Glen Whitwer, Tom Barron, Tom Butler, Jim Henderson, and Mike Riggs.”  --- Joe Taussig, Sec. A

“It is not altogether clear to me what exactly your stance on the validity of the Vietnam War is.  If I can interpret a little, it seems you are saying that the "revisionist" history is the anti-war p.o.v.  I would respectfully make the case that the actual "revisionist" history is that the war was justified and we just executed it poorly.  I was anti-war before I was drafted, while I was in the service, and remain so to this day.  Anyway, I trust that you will be presenting a "fair and balanced" review of the Vietnam War in addition to giving the just and due honor to the American kids who gave "above and beyond" in that whole misguided and very un-American affair.” --- Doug Burns, Sec. A
